New members are always welcome with the club. Whether you have previous experience in Shotokan Karate, another martial art, or no experience at all, we look forward to having you training with us. You are always welcome to contact us if you have any questions, but hopefully this site will provide you with some answers to common questions from new students.
You can find days/times of training in the training schedule. Contact us (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you are interested in training, and we can provide you with more details and directions to training.
On your first day, it is recommended that you show up 5-10 minutes prior to the start of class so that you can get a brief introduction to the club from the instructors. On your first day, you are welcome to join the class. Often on a student's first day, one of the instructors will work with you privately to introduce you to the basic techniques. Typically either later the first day or during your second class, you will be working alongside the others in the dojo during training. If you prefer to observe a class first before you join in training, that is also perfectly fine.
You will be asked to complete a club waiver at your first training. We have copies at class, or you can print one from the resources page in advance and bring it with you.
For new members with the club, your first month is free. This is to give you a chance to try out the club and see if we're a good fit for you. If you continue with the club, the cost is $5/month to help cover the cost of insurance and club dues.
After Your First Class
Following your first class, you will receive a welcome message from Sensei with some information about the club. We add you to the club roster and to the club listserv (Google group) so that you receive announcements related to the club.
We usually recommend for students to try a few classes before purchasing a uniform to see if you want to stick with training. If you decide that you want a gi (uniform), you can get one from Sensei. We buy them wholesale to keep costs down, and the cost for a beginner gi and obi (uniform and belt) is usually about $30.
The club typically participates in ranking exams three times per year (usually April, August, and December). During your first exam, you will pay the exam fee ($15) as well as your $25 annual membership dues to the ISKF (International Shotokan Karate Federation - our parent organization). Sensei will contact you closer to the exam dates if you will be eligible to test.
